Klappenberger & Son partners with Franchise Beast to expand its painting and handyman franchise nationwide

The Annapolis-based painting company has sold all territories in DC, Maryland and Virginia and is looking to other states for further expansion

The Klappenberger & Son Painting and Handyman franchise, known for its exquisite work across the DC region and for painting at the White House, the Smithsonian, the Capitol, and the Pentagon, announced today its new partnership with Franchise Beast, a franchise sales company known for taking brands such as Just Let Me Do It and Sobik’s Subs nationwide.

Founded in 1989, by David Klappenberger, Klappenberger & Son was an instant success and became known as one of the finest painting companies on the East Coast. In 2017, David decided to franchise the business. “After years of success, I decided I wanted to teach other people how to do what I did and began a 2-year process of putting all the pieces of the puzzle together that would be necessary for my franchisees to experience the same success I did, but in a much shorter period of time.”

James Emerson, “Beast Master” and CEO of Franchise Beast, said he is excited to partner with Klappenberger & Son because it’s a franchise that’s inexpensive to open and one that’s scalable. “I’m excited and eager to join forces with David and his team to build and grow the Klappenberger and Son franchise system. With thirty years of experience behind the brand, and a reputation unmatched in the painting industry, Klappenberger and Son is set for rapid growth,” said James. “We are very proud to partner with them and we expect big things.”

David said Klappenberger & Son Painting and Handyman is in industries that always thrive, in good times and bad. “Painting and handyman services are, collectively, $32 billion industries that are recession-resistant and always do well,” said David. “Almost every structure on earth will need painting or repair at present, or in the near future, and we’re set for our franchisees to capitalize on that unlimited potential.”

Klappenberger & Son currently has eleven territories sold, and the company expects to sell up to 20 additional franchise territories in 2020. By 2021, the expectation is for the brand to have franchisees coast-to-coast. Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia territories are sold out. “One thing is sure, there are always painting jobs,” David said. “In the near future, we hope to have a Klappenberger & Son franchise in most major markets across the country.”

Klappenberger & Son has a unique selling point in the franchise industry — a guarantee. David said the guarantee is that each new franchisee will do at least $500,000 in gross revenue in the first 20 months of the opening of his or her territory if certain qualifications are met. “I guarantee that revenue, or I’ll refund the franchise fee,” said David. “I just wanted to back up what I was teaching and put my money where my mouth is. I also noticed how big of a leap of faith it is for people to buy a franchise and I thought the guarantee would help reduce that anxiety.”

When David created the Klappenberger & Son franchise system, he wanted it to be the best, so he offered services and features that no other franchise offered. David said, “These services and features had to have real value and be obvious to anyone, even with no experience in the industry.” David decided on:

Large Territories — “Most of our territories are between 400,000 and 600,000 people. This is large enough size to have 40 or more people working out in the field and to earn a substantial income. Our competitors’ territories are around 100,000 to 200,000 people.”

Training — “Our training program lasts six weeks. It includes all the pieces of the puzzle to not just run but grow your own business. Our competitors’ training only lasts two to four weeks.”

Rewarding Hard Work — “I’ve always believed that the harder you work, the more you should keep. That’s why I have reduced my royalties from 6% to 4% after you gross a million dollars in sales.”

James said Klappenberger & Son are looking for entrepreneurs to own and operate territories across the United States. “If you’re looking for a painting and handyman business and you’re all about quality work and exceeding customer expectations and are genuinely interested in discussing the possibility of building your very own business, look no further.”

There are certain qualifications required of those seeking to own a Klappenberger & Son franchise. According to David, each franchisee must:

  • Be honest, trustworthy and of outstanding character
  • Be a high-energy individual with a strong work ethic
  • Have excellent customer relations, sales and managerial skills
  • Have excellent communication skills
  • Not want to rest on last year’s salary, but rather want more
  • Possess basic business and computer skills

“Prior painting or home improvement experience will be considered a plus, and we even offer a compelling program option for existing painting businesses, however, previous industry experience is not a necessity. In fact I have yet to sell a franchise to anyone with any previous experience in painting or handyman” David said.

Klappenberger & Son has been a leader in interior and exterior painting since 1989 and has painted some of the finest businesses, homes and government buildings across the East Coast, including work for the Baltimore Ravens owner, Under Armour, the White House, the Smithsonian, the Pentagon, and the U.S. Court of Appeals.

Owner David Klappenberger attributes his 30+ years as a successful painting contractor to regular communications with the customer and using only experienced painters with an eye for detail.
